- Its what I had in mind when I decided to look for a small, lightweight little laptop for personal travel use. It filled my every expectation.
I wanted something that I could drop in my carry-on and not have to huff and puff as I was lugging it thru the airport.
I'm not expecting it to do my engineering work, I've got a company unit for that (and what a pain it is to use in the hotel room with all its firewall protection).
There are things that some might want in this that it doesn't have, but they would just make it bigger or more expensive.
I've had it 6 weeks now and am real happy; got what I paid for.
- Great product for its intended purpose; and really fun
- This laptop is very small and very light. As a consequence, the keyboard is tiny. People complain about that but they miss the point. It isn't as small as a BlackBerry or similar devices. The laptop is about the size of a small book so it is easy to take with you when you don't feel like lugging a huge laptop.
The screen is very good and the Linux OS is just fine. I like Linux but my wife, you is neutral, said she doesn't care if it has XP or not. She can work with her documents and surf no problem.
I used it when I was on jury duty and wrote to my wife and work since we weren't allowed to have cell phones. It connected to their wireless flawlessly and the time flew by as I watched movies and sent email.
Another cool thing is the huge communities that have been created for this thing. They show how to mod it, put operating systems on it, all kinds of things. You can get an MSI wind I suppose, but it won't have the cult following!
- Almost perfect ! [review about goods and bads]
- Don't read bad reviews (one star ones), are from people with bad skills in computers.
THE GOOD:
> Little machine that you can put even under your long coat
> Low power consuption (my powerful desktop pc is like a dragon)
[note: imagine a world with 34 Watts computers, this will cause more inexpensive energy prices, low oil prices, less CO2 = less hurricanes and inundations, my powerful desktop pc consumes 350 Watts. Now my energy bill goes down using the eee pc, and I can leave it downloading stuff 24 hours]
> High screen resolution with small pixels (1024 x 600 8.9'')
> Browse web pages without need the horizontal scrolling (due to 1024px)
> Easy to handle with your hands (very confortable at the pivot)
> Web cam and microphone integrated
> Jacks for your earphones and microphone
> VGA output
> 3 USB ports, 1 SD/MMC card port, 1 ethernet port
> Wifi integrated
> You can upgrade it (ram, etc.I buy a touch screen for this little machine)
[note: there are unused/used internals usb ports. if you know about electronics (im engineer) you can use it to put some internal upgrades and/or use usbhubs, look for instructions on the web]
> Perfect and easy to read instrucctions
> You can install windows xp using a usb memory or a sd card (instructions in the web), even with ubuntu and compiz ;-), or if you are not so skilled in computers, using a usb-dvd unit
> Video hardware supports 3D applications (not a nVidia card but works)
> very light (two pounds)
THE BAD:
> Heatsinks are below of the keyboard and the pad (you can feel the heat), video processor and bridge chips consumes a lot of power = HEAT
> You need like a week to use the keyboard like a pro (of course, is little)
> Battery life 2.5 hours only (I buy this and not the eee 901 since I don't care about battery life because *I use it at home* and the celeron processor is faster than the atom ). Anyway you can find a 10400mAH battery for 40 dollars (7 hours of batery life!)
[note: I'm not totally sure about performance vs atom, since some benchmarks said that the 901 is faster, and others said that the celeron is faster than the atom, but then WHY THEY CHANGE BACK TO THE CELERON M with the avanced models like eee pc 904HD ? ]
> Pads buttons fells cheapee
> No caps led diodes indicators (you need to install a app like firstcap in xp) and for linux there is one in the dvd (included)
> No integrated bluetooth (the eee pc 901 have it)
> No DVD burner/reader (of course, there is no space to put one)
RECOMENDATIONS:
> Change the desktop colors to 16 bits (increase perfomance a little, battery life a little too, and reduce heat)
> Reduce the screen brightness
> Turn off virtual memory (with 1GB of RAM, it is not necesary)
> Turn off unnecesary windows services (annoying and memory eaters)
> Delete all windows unnecesary files (like drivers that you will never need, like virtual memory, they use a lot of hard disk space)
> Buy a inexpensive usb bluetooth device if you need it (you can find it at amazon, they are very tiny *for laptops*)
> Buy the 10400mAH battery if you need more battery life (more money *40* but it worth)
> Install both, windows xp and linux http://www.eeebuntu.org/, with compiz too for 3d desktop stuff
> Buy a 32 GB SD card or extra storage if you need it (not necesary at all) = more money
> Get and install the touch screen (optional but trekkies like me love it) = more money too
> Buy a slim usb dvd-rw, usb powered (more bucks, not necesary at all)
> Asus are launching advanced eee pcs every month, SO YOU CAN REPENT OF WASTE YOUR MONEY and not wait a little bit. VERY BAD TACTIC MARKET. Anyway THIS IS THE MOST SUPPORTED EEE PC now, you can find a lot of things from fans to touch screens and internal upgrades.

THIS LITTLE NOTEBOOK, IT IS A ULTRAPORTABLE DEVICE ! some people expect 120GB or hard disk, 2GB of ram, 256MB of video memory, etc. If this is your desire, buy a laptop with thats features, not this one.
- This is one of the best purchases I've made. It is the perfect travel computer for checking emails and archiving digital photos without lugging a big heavy laptop through the airport.
- Fantastic little machine ready to go anywhere you are!
- Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/RM1TN6CXDYUDY I'm Christian and I'm reviewing the eeePC 900 (which I love!) for an online talk show, GoodDayJoplin.net
Hopefully the review is helpful to you! This laptop is an amazing little laptop that can do anything a regular computer can. Give it a try, you'll probably like it.
- The Eee Pc is an amazing machine. I did not have problems with the keyboard, as this is one of the problems that people talk more about: since I am a woman, I guess my fingers are smaller and they work well with the small keyboard. The OS is amazing. I only had difficulties to make it work with other languages (ie. Portuguese and Spanish) but after some Google search it is working perfectly well. I wish the battery was longer, though, and that it had 3G, so if you have time, maybe it is a good idea to wait for the next generation.
- The computer is easy to use and easy to carry with you.
It is a great Nettop. It responds well with the original configuration.
I increased the ram from 1GB to 2GB and changed the version of Linux I use. The original operating system Xandros is easy to use and reponsive. But, with the amount of free software or OS's out there, I decided to try something different. Ubuntu Linux works well.I'm very happy with my purchase. The only downside is the fact that the priced dropped 2 weeks after i bought it.
- Even better than expected
- Boots in no time. No crashes. Quite quiet. Tolerable battery life time. Weighs next to nothing.
- Why I love my ASUS Eee PC 900 20g (8.9 inch Display)
- First..thanks to everyone that wrote a review, it helped in my purchasing decision. I chose this laptop for a number of reasons:
My Toshiba Satellite of about 4 yrs died in the middle of a final paper for class.
My sister purchased a HP laptop that came pre-installed with Vista (hated it!!)
My daughter has a macbook and we love it!!
Finally - I wanted to try out Linux and I wanted a smaller subnotebook, after lugging around a 15 inch toshiba...it was time for a change!
I researched this baby for about 3 months. Everyday..reading reviews, calling my fellow techie friends asking their input..finally I realized no one could talk me out of buying my baby mac..(that is what I called it)..of course like some people I had a great justification for purchasing my new toy...well..its a graduation gift to me from me, and well..um..I wanted to get macbook, but this is MUCH cheaper...and most important..I wanted to try out Linux ..thanks to GWBush - I bought it!!!
The keyboard is small, but hey, like anything in life, I got use to it...I have read lot of complaints about users with the XP version..hmm..HELLO..MICROSOFT!!! I am so quickly moving away from XP to Linux! Besides I am a google user - I typed all of my papers in google documents...I love Mozilla...so..yes I love my new toy...I just drop it into my bag - yes I am a woman that carries a big bag so this is perfect.
I am able to watch streaming videos on youtube and my online movie sites...listen to streaming music - just hook it up to my speakers...hey..my own stereo system!!
My advice - dont use XP - go with Linux!!
- OMG - Add software with caution - I'd still buy it though...
- Update July 29, 2008:
Exchanged my Asus Eee PC 900. If you read my stuff below you'll see the problems I encountered. Because it was within 14 days of purchasing my Eee PC Best Buy just did an Exchange, very easy. I opted NOT to have them optimize it which I think was a good decision. I think I either had a lemon or their optimization caused some issues. On the old one some of the Fn functions did not work: Toggling, WiFi on and off, Volume Control and Mute. What I said below about installing iTunes to the correct drive may not be true. I'm not seeing a second hard drive, logical or physical. The last straw was when I attempted the Recovery (following the iTunes fiasco) I got an error: Bad Block(s) Encountered During Read. Could be a small problem or a big one but whatever it was I got a brand new Asus Eee PC 900 from Best Buy and set it up myself. I've got Verizon Wireless Broadband installed on the new Eee and it's working great.
Initial Review:
I can understand why one of the reviewers was disappointed with his Asus eee 900. I got mine at Best Buy for $[...] and a trimmed down version of Windows XP Home was pre-installed. It cannot handle Vista or a full version of XP and especially XP Pro. I also won't be adding MS Office products. If I need to work on something like that I will use the pre-installed Star Office or Works and save it in the appropriate format. For my needs, surfing the net at starbucks, etc. it will work great. I was also able to install VZAccess Manager and connect to Verizon Broadband with my USB720 modem. It has 3 USB Ports which is great, more than I expected. The speakers work great. Sound better than my Gateway Solo laptop. I used my iPod to transfer files like VZAccess Manager exe to the Asus. I'm on the road and forgot to bring a USB Stick. Also it comes with a nice padded sleeve although the small power supply/cord will not fit in that. A ZDNet review says the battery will last 3+ hours and that's with playing a DVD (external drive). That would be great on an airplane. I wish they had internet access on the plane :b...
Update - July 23, 2008:
I have the Eee PC 900 with XP and decided to install iTunes in order to add a few of my songs from my iPod. (Not the whole library.) The install went fine and the computer restarted without a hitch. When I tried to open iTunes it ran thru some configuration set up and ended with an error message about a 'bad shortcut'. Next I got a taskbar pop up message about a memory location error (ewww). I tried to remove iTunes but got an error about not enough space (ewww). I shut it down and later tried to boot it back up: Disk Error (Ctrl + Alt + Del). Just an infinite cycle there. My Recovery Disk is 200 miles away so I'll have to wait till I get back home to fix. I am guessing that will take it back to factory settings(???)
Yes I would still get this UMPC. I'd love to wait around for the 901 or 1000 but that's life isn't it. My advice is to always Google before you install anything to see what others have learned. There is info and recommendations about installing iTunes on the Eee PC, if only I'd done my homework.
Adding RAM and the Warranty. While on the phone with Asus I asked about adding RAM and voiding the Warranty. He stated that it would not void the warrany as long as I replaced the original RAM before sending my Eee PC back to Asus. I don't have our conversation recorded or notarized but for what it's worth....

- I purchased this item hoping for a small, highly portable second laptop to take with me when I travel for business. What I got, however, is a PC that takes 20 minutes to boot, hour-glasses every time you move the mouse, and is generally completely worthless. Returned and went with the Eee PC1000 and it is a much better machine.
- If you wish to use Windows XP...forget about it!
- This is a nifty little computer, but if you plan to use Windows XP on it, forget about it. The tech data indicates that it is easy to convert from Linux to XP...which it is. But, the miniscule 4GB F drive is totally taken up with Windows applications so the computer cannot function due to lack of space on this drive. I spoke to am Asus tech specialist, and there was no way he could make the computer work due to these limitations on the F drive. Of course there are another 16 GB on the C drive, but they are meaningless for functionality.
Don't buy this rip-off if you want to use XP.
- i ASUS Eee PC 900 20G (8.9" Display, 900 MHz Intel Mobile CPU, 1 GB RAM, 20 GB Solid State Drive, Linux, 4 Cell Battery) Galaxy Black
After reading reviews for a couple of weeks, I purchased a eeepc900. i was happy with the size and the quality of the screen image, but linux is just useless. i had no idea that there are so many things you can't do, and the eeepc seems impossible to upgrade without first adding windows xp, which i'll do next week. anyway, i think asus is a terrible company because after just two weeks of this 900 version, they put out a 16g version, with xp, for $150 less than i paid. there's no way to return mine, because by the time i pay the restocking fee, i've already lost the money. i really, really wish i had waited for a MSI. dont buy eeepc. i made a mistake with this purchase.
- I bought this notebook for my mobile usage. It has the good looks and is fast while running win-xp too. I am impressed but unable to keep doing so as, i realized it gets really heated up ...gave me HOT knees. I am sending it back. U would love it but only if heating is not an issue.
- I Really Wanted To Like This Thing, But...
- I love the idea of the Asus Eee PC. I've long wanted a nearly full-featured laptop in this size.
So after reading so many positive reviews for this I decided to go ahead and get one. Sadly, after a mere two days playing with it, I have an RMA to get a refund.
So what's my gripe with it?
Several things. Firstly, though this machine has "20GB" of storage, its 20GB is spanning two storage devices, it's not a single drive. The formatted capacity here is 3.74GB for the main faster SSD that the OS runs from, and 15GB for the slower secondary storage.
I purchased this version and installed XP Pro on it (since the XP version only comes with 12GB). 4GB is simply too small. After installing and updating XP, there was just no room left to install any apps I wanted, even after cleaning up the drive.
Secondly, the touch pad and buttons. The touch pad is WAY too sensitive and finicky, frankly it's just terrible. Even knowing this and trying to carefully tap click, it would way too often instead perform an extremely fast double click, and it would often repeatedly/consecutively do this. This gets extremely irritating very fast. Updating the touch pad driver had no effect for me.
As for the touch pad buttons, they are way too stiff. Perhaps they wear down after a lot of use, but I'd go insane before ever finding out.
Lastly, and the least excusable, is the battery life. For a device like this it's simply inexcusably awful. This is with the 5800mAh battery: with wireless OFF (FN + F2) and the screen dimmed down to its second most dark setting (which is really unacceptably dark for all but the very best-lit environments), this thing barely lasted over 2 hours. One more battery cycle to confirm this pathetic performance and I was ready to box it up and send it back.
I can forgive a lot of things regarding a tiny laptop, the small screen, small keyboards that are tricky to type on, etc. That is totally excusable.
But what a tiny laptop with a small screen, no optical drive, and a solid state hard drive should absolutely excel at is battery life, and this fails horribly. Less than 2.5hrs with a darkened screen and disabled wifi is just inexcusable.
If you're still really intent on a micro laptop, I still wouldn't recommend the 900, I'd highly recommend you just wait a few weeks for the Eee PC 901. It features the new highly efficient Intel Atom which uses far less energy and therefore improves battery life (hopefully Intel will develop a new efficient chipset to go along with it).
I still love the idea of an Eee PC and look forward to what Asus and other companies will have to offer over the coming year or so. If this had a minimum 8GB primary SSD, a far better touch pad and buttons, and the battery lasted 4+ hours with wifi enabled and the brightness halfway up, I'd love it.

- I purchased this little computer as a pilot project. I wanted to show computer phobes that netbooks are a viable way into computers and mobile computing. The advantages are size and weight. The deficits are smaller screen size and storage. However, these are no biggies.
My little Netbook receives a lot of attention. Everyone wants to try it from adults, and especially teenagers who say they are going to ask their parents for one. Who can resist? It does most everything a larger lappie would do except burn CD's and DVD's. The screen size is a tad small, but I don't mind losing screen size for ultimate portability. The keyboard is small, but even with my larger hands and some familiarization you eventually get facile. This took about a week. The speakers are teeney, so don't expect stupendous sound unless you mount externally powered speakers.
On the technical side - the wireless was easy to configure, though I do have to turn it on manually to activate. It easily picks up hotspots and the Linux system in easy to navigate and booting up takes only moments. If there were a slight negative about Linux it's a few more steps involved in moving files and managing Linux folders. I am so used to placing folders on a MAC desktop vs. tucking it away in multiple Linux document folders under a "work" tab. Not an issue as it becomes second nature.
On the hardware side the battery lasts a few hours 2-3, but oddly if left unplugged and shutoff the netbook battery drains itself quite quickly. I had topped the battery to 100% and left it unplugged from the charger for six days. Upon returning the battery was down to surprising 50%. Again, no biggie as it stays plugged in most of the time.
In short, for a very portable, cute and usable laptop this ASUS represents a terrific alternative to heavier notebook computers and is solidly built. Kids love it!
- For the complete novice or expert programmer - no one in between
- Yes, the Eeepc is a wonder, but you need to know what you're getting with this if you don't opt for Windows. You are NOT getting a computer with an open operating system and a few useful programs - you are getting a completely modified version of Linux that is locked from any customization what-so-ever.
If you are a complete novice and just want to check email and surf the web, then this computer is wonderful. And if you are a hardened Linux programmer, you can dig into this thing and modify it to your heart's content.
But if you're like the other 90% of us, you have enough experience with computers that you'd probably like to install something that isn't already on it, and unless you enroll in a programming class, GOOD LUCK!
I'm rooting for Linux, but it has a LONG way to go. It's absolutely impractical for anyone not already an expert with it. I am a database programmer, so I'm usually pretty resourceful when it comes to figuring things out, but even I have spent WEEKS trying to get this thing to do what I want. Once I started modifying it, there were nothing but problems. I swear, I actively had to reprogram the operating system to NOT delete files off the desktop when it's turned off. That's insane. It's not worth it...
Go for the Windows install, or get a Dell Mini. You've been warned...
- Nice but the operating system had to go
- It's great, but in order to enjoy it I had to load "eee ubuntu."
Now everything is fine.
