- I think the only all-in-one with fax to buy, or else none at all.
- In my view, all-in-one faxers only make sense for a tiny-use home-office like mine. In which case this is the one to get: cheap-as-they-come, but durable enough, and a small footprint.
This HP 5610 currently costs about $100. For serious usage, I would not spend $200 or more on a 'quality' all-in-one. I can get separate printer and fax units for the same total cost ... perhaps that use the same cartridges ... and that perform better as specialized units do ... and that do not all need to be replaced whenever just one function breaks...! Thus I say, 'if' you need an all-in-one, this is 'the' all-in-one to get. If this is not appropriate for you, then in my view, no all-in-one is appropriate for you. If you need something for heavier use, then I would suggest separate units.
Some fine points.
* The 'negative' reviews here seem mainly from people who burn this thing out by using it frequently as a printer.
* As explained above, I especially disagree with some reviewers who suggest a more expensive all-in-one for a sizeable office.
* HP faxes have the best reputation. My previous HP fax lasted 20 years.
* Attractive, efficient rectangular design. Not broad and flat. Not with plastic wings sticking out.
* 'Stationary' flatbed scanner. Wow.
* Don't buy aftermarket cartridges. Buy manufacturer cartidges and have them refilled for $5 at Walgreens.
* Why have a fax when you can get Efax? Because I do not like opening efiles just to find a junk fax. And I do not like answer machines so I tell people if it's an emergency, send a fax. And I can not afford frequent Florida vacations, so as a substitute, I like to be able to turn off the computer.
* I have not used mine for very long yet. But many long-time users here are well satisfied. Also I do update my reviews. If you are reading this some time after May 2008, and this is not revised with some strong negative, then please judge accordingly.
I had one installation problem.
* Fatal Error 1324: "MyPictures contains invalid characters."
I went to the HP online database, no references to error 1324. They have an 800 number which hopefully would have solved the problem. But first, I decided to change the spelling of the "My Pictures" file in my documents folder, to "MyPictures" without a space... voila. I think this had nothing to do with making the printer work, but only the free photo editing software. Nonetheless, the installation program insisted on two options: stop everything... or restart from scratch, only to bump up against the same problem again... just because the photo editor could not find the default "My Pictures" file... (!) So I cannot say they have the most ingenius software. But they do have that 800 number.
- I have had this printer for quite a long time now (almost a year).
I must say that I am very impressed with this printer!
It was very easy to install ( Using windows vista home premium OS) and printing was hassle free. The printing speed is fairly decent and the quality is also really really good ! (especially the color print quality).
I also used it to send and receive fax and it was a piece of cake. Simply plug in the phone cord and dial the number like you do on fax machines!
I also used the scanner and copier and it works like a charm!! Haven't had any problems with anything so far !
- One fine printer at a very reasonable price!
- After studying the benefits and features of various brands and models of printers and the all-in-ones, I finally chose the HP Office Jet 5610 All-In-One and am so glad I did!
I followed the quick guide to unpack, install the paper, and ink cartridges. There is one instruction from the guide that I deviated from and I had no problems installing the "all-in-one software" the first time. I didn't plug in the printer power cord OR the USB Cable until the software on-screen instructions told me to plug in the USB Cable. Because I have owned several HP products and sometimes their product software is quirky to download and after reading many reviews telling about downloading problems, I took the extra precaution of not powering up the printer period until the software instructions told me to plug in the USB cable.
Instructions for setting up the All-In-One, in my opinion, are very thorough, concise, and easy to follow. Setting the various features for the printer, copier, fax went smoothly and all three work just fine.
This is a great item at a reasonable price. The only negative comments I have to offer are: (1) the paper trays and their support seem a little chintzy compared to the older models; (2) as the printer is revving up to print, it seems much louder than what my older HP printer sounded. These two negatives do not have a thing to do with the quality of product or productivity but I thought I would just mention them.
I have had no problems in faxing, printing (paper jams, etc.) or copying and would highly recommend the HP 5610!
As an added note: I have Windows XP (and used the included XP installation CD) but the HP 5610 is compatible with Windows Vista and there is an additional CD included for Windows Vista users for HP 5610 software installation.
- HP Officejet 5610 All-In-One
- To be honest, I was sure this Officejet would work on Windows 98 SE. I was sure the info. on it said it would. And boy, you could not beat the price. HP makes some of the best equpment in the world. We have a HP Deskjet 692C that we are still using. It will even print banners. It does a great job. It just keeps printing, and printing, and printing. We know from experience over many years that HP makes great products. Well, we got the Officejet 5610 and the box said Windows 98 SE not supported. Our Daughter and Son-In-Law have a HP psc 2175 All-In-One that does not fax, the Officejet 5610 will fax, so I traded with them. They have there own business, so they need a good printer. They love it. One of the good things about the 5610 is you don't have to have a computer to use it. It will do a great job without one. I have to say we all are happy with the HP All-In-Ones that we have. I would reccomend the HP Officejet 5610 All-In-One to anybody who wants a great piece of equpment that will stand the test of time. Remember HP when you need equpment.
- DON'T LET THE PRICE FOOL YOU
- I tried 3 Epson printers first; Epson used to be my favorite, but all 3 had one thing or another wrong with them and had to be returned. I had just about given up finding a decent one at a reasonable price. Then I came upon this HP OfficeJet. The price is what attracted me at first; then, when I saw it was a printer, scanner, copier and fax all in one, I was amazed. I thought, why not try it. I purchased it and am so glad I did. This machine works perfectly in all aspects. I do transfer printing and really needed something that gave a perfect picture every time - this is it! I now see why HP is rated #1 in the market. I highly recommend the OfficeJet to anyone looking for a reasonably priced, high quality all-in-one.
- Great printer, scanner, fax, copier- ALL IN ONE
- I bought this product for a second time, thinking my first one had failed me after about 3-4 years; however, it was operator error (in other words, me) which caused it not to work. So now for the great price for this machine, I have two working HP All-in-One (which it actually is). This is a great-working machine.
- this is my 2nd hp all in one printer, great for home office and worth the price.
- I never expected such a dependable "All-in-One"
- I needed a good "All-in-One" printer at good price. I wasn't expecting anything like this printer has proven to be. It's out performed printers I've had that cost 3 times more! And no I don't own stock in HP. It installed flawlessly on my laptop running Windows XP. Took maybe 15 to 20 minutes and NO problems. I don't know why others experienced such trouble installing theirs but I was pleasantly surprised. So far it hasn't jammed or hiccuped in any way whatsoever. I've printed normal quality, normal fast, draft fast and photo quality on photo paper. The results were slow on normal quality, screaming fast on draft fast. I'm a professional photographer and I didn't purchase this printer for that purpose but I was VERY surprised at the results. Great if you have family and friends over and your taking pictures with your digital camera and instead of mailing the pics to everyone later you can print them right away and your guests can leave with the pictures in hand. It's by no means a "photo" printer but the results are more than just OK. I'll update again when once I have a few thousand pages on the odometer instead of just a few hundred. I'm going to be using this printer much more than I thought. It's nice to purchase a product that exceeds your expectations. All for $100 bucks.
- ignore the negatives below - THIS IS A BEST BUY
- A GREAT LITTLE MACHINE - EASY TO SET UP AND USE. FAST ENOUGH TO SUIT ANY HOME USER. WHY SPEND MORE THAN $100+. THE QUALITY IS THERE AND HP IS THERE TO BACK IT UP!

- Carriage Jams all the time
- This is the second HP all-in-one I've had. I've been happy with both of them, right up to the time the warranty runs out. About a week after it does, both of them quit working, with no hope of getting fixed. On this machine, the carriage jams every time I print a page. HP gives you a nice long instruction on how to clear the jam - easy enough, but it does it after EVERY PAGE, and cancels the print once it's cleared. Therefore, I can never print more than one page at a time.
- I can't tell you how many hours I have spent trying to install the software. I have tried every suggestion I can find online. Installation fails but the printer function works. At least print quality is decent. Scan function won't work because of screwed up installation. Tried download from HP, same problems. I can't believe it's this difficult. Won't buy an HP next time around, which may be soon if I throw this thing out the window.
- Made to last less than ONE YEAR!
- What a great bargain for an all-in-one printer. The first one we bought last year and within 60 days the carriage was jamming for no apparent reason, tried troubleshooting and tech support but we had to fight nail and tooth just to get an exchange. Finally able to exchange the printer for identical model and all is well for about 9 months. Suddenly the carriage was jamming and tearing the paper. Tried online troubleshooting, tried everything under the sun to fix the problem then tried HP. Called HP tech support and they tell me that there is a 90 day warranty and it has expired that I need to pay $35 over the phone to talk to tech support (which provide the same info. as online troubleshooting). So I ask HP where I can have the printer serviced or repaired and I am told that they have no information about that. So I ask HP for their mailing address to send my version of a hate letter to the head of their company, and I am told they have no mailing address and the guy on the other end of the phone repeats the HP website address. UNREAL - I am surprised that HP is not concerned about the consumer's problems with their products. Obviously this thing is defective (we had two of them with the same exact problems). No wonder this printer is now on clearance at my local Staples store for $60. I do not recommend this product and I caution buying HP products because the company is not very helpful when their products fail to perform.
- Out of the box - doesn't work
- Right out of the box, it doesn't work. Printer allignment fails - talked to HP support, but their instructions don't work either. Tried following instructions in the manual, but the menus don't seem to agree with what I see on the screen. I'd like to send it back.
- I ordered this HP 5610 because it specifically states under the Product Description that it is compatible with Windows 98 and Windows 98 SE. I did receive the product 2 days after I ordered it, however, upon attempting to load the software I received an error message stating that it does not support Windows 98. (The Product Description also mentioned other operarting systems that are not supported) Needless to say, I am now returning the printer back to Amazon.com.
- officejet 5610 all-in-one
- HP Officejet 5610 All-in-One Printer/Fax/Scanner/Copier (Q7311A#ABA)The printer/scanner/copier/fax works well, but the ad clearly stated that it was compatible with Windows 95, 98, 98se,me,nt, 2000, xp, and vista. It is not. When it arrived, it said on the box it was NOT compatible with 95, 98, 98se, me, or nt. Unfortunately, I chose it because I was running windows me. Since it was the second one I had bought (the first one at the recommendation of HP, which I had to return for the same reason) I decided to bite the bullet and upgrade to xp. So after an additional $100, I finally got the thing to work. Sort of. It will not scan an image to the computer from paper while online. The fax hangs up when it feels like it. And it doesn't hold much paper. But since it sort of works, (better than my computer now) I guess I will keep it. Shipping was fast, but DO NOT buy this if you don't have at MINIMUM windows 2000.
- I've had this machine for about six months and find it very difficult to load the paper, plus it jams on a regular basis. Another annoyance is that you must remove the output tray to load the input tray. Even if you just want to insert one sheet of paper to say for instance print on the back of it you have to take out the output tray and then it takes too much time trying to insert that one sheet just right. Most of all I hate that I can not for all the world cancel a print project. Bring up the printer software and try to cancel that print job and it simply will not go away. Even after turning off the printer and the computer the next day when I turn them back on that sucker will go right ahead printing and wasting ink on the unwanted print job. For once I'm glad these things never last more than a few years because I won't be sorry to see this one die. I dread having to print anything because of the fact that only one in three jobs go well. The more I use it the more I hate it.
- This is an okay device when it works properly; however, I had some minor problems with it (it stopped functioning from the buttons on the printer itself, and none of the solutions I found online worked) and called their support. They couldn't care less about my problem or whether or not I choose HP products in the future. Refused to escalate my call or my feedback, though I was very polite, etc.
I will never, ever, purchase an HP product again, and I will shout the same from the highest rooftop. Buyer beware.
- Worked great for the first year and a half. Now the cartridge jams after every printed page. I have replaced the ink cartridges, but the problem persists. Very annoying problem.
- I bought this to replace our HP psc 1200 which had given good service for many years. Our previous all-in-one always worked on any computer we installed the software in.
The 5610 installs a huge software package. It screwed up the Fuji camera software I'd been using.
The HP software I had for my last printer could be interupted at any time; I'd pull the paper supply out, then cancel whatever I didn't want in the print queue.
The software for the 5610 has a very hard time cancelling a document; at the least it insists on wasting an extra sheet of paper. Worse, I now have a document that can't be cancelled at all and it's got the computer completely frozen up.
The paper feed is messed up and ruins documents especially when you're using HP's most expensive photo paper and ink.
The photo printing quality is not great unless you use the very highest settings and then it is extremely slow (think 30 minutes per picture) and most likely to ruin your pictures by misfeeding or software glitches.
This HP is garbage. Try a different brand.

- Great Printer, Fax, Copier
- I am concerned about how much more printing I do, now that I have my HP 5610. (That is praise) Buy one, enjoy printing quality, and reliability.
- I love this printer, it has all the features that is needed and it is compact and durable. I give it a excellent rating.

- I had a printer like this previously & actually purchased this one for $25.00 less than the former one. I set it up myself in no time & it works! No problems!!!!!!
- HP officejet 5610 all in one printer, copier, scanner, fax
- Value driven product, little deuce coupe of the printers; will be a valuable home office asset for years to come, it does it all.

- We had been in the market for a new printer for about 2 months. Our son will be a senior in high school this year, and we knew we wanted a printer great for text printing for college applications, etc. This unit does it all! I have found the fax machine very handy as well. I am very pleased with our choice!
