- Enjoy music, videos, and Internet applications on the go, with control at your fingertips! Powered by Microsoft Windows Mobile 5.0 Pocket PC, the iPAQ rx1955 has big functionality for not much money.

- I bought this for my husband on our Anniversary. He loved it has really come in handy from him as he needs a lot of phone numbers to be stored for work and a calendar to keep his ever changing work schedule in. Also, allows him to access wireless internet if he needs to.
- It's nice, thin and light, but lacks memory and processor power for stronger applications (such as skype). Also lacks bluetooth.
The price and the low weight compensates it's limitations, making this iPAQ a great PDA option.
- This is an awesome piece of machinery! I have used a 4150 for the last 2+ years and my daughter accidently sat on the screen a few weeks ago and broke it. I was dead in the water as I take all my notes for meetings, have my entire suite of Outlook functions and sync up Microsoft Word Docs as my meting notes all the time. With only half a screen I was dead and now the new 1955 is sooo much better. the ability to change the display from landscape to protrait and back is a life saver as you take notes and view certain documents. The WiFi is great at home to surf the net while watching TV in bed, without having to hold a bulky laptop on your lap. It is a great device - way to go HP!!!!!
- Nice unit alot smaller than the Ipaq 3850 I just traded in on this trhough HP Trade Up.
Miss having CF slot though.
- I love my ipaq. I got it on Christmas(2006)and since then i've used it for tons of things. I use it to write down homework, to play awesome games(i am about to order Rise of empires),for music , and i wll soon use it for ebooks. I highly recommend this product. It may take a while to get used to it, but in a few months it will be worth it.
- BEST EVER SO FAR!!! THE BEST AND VERY EASY!!
- This is easy to sync! Right out of box it is very user friendly.
I would recommend it to the beginner or the very advanced user.
Busy or pleasure... it's terrific!!
Go for it and I mean it!! A++++
- Haven't had any problems w/ it. I use it mainly for a book reader, and I need to expand the memory, but I have over 150 Ebooks on it. Great little computer
- Great entry level 4 stars and 1 star for the price
- It is great. I got the ipaq last week and loving it. If the unit has more memory, it is ideal but you got what you paid for. It is the best unit for that price range. The display is bright and clear. Play mp3 and movie without problem but it is not like window that you can run multiple applications. One at a time is fine. The wireless is easy to use and get very good reception. There are few little drew backs. It does not come with the stand/station. It only comes with cable that connect to PC and power at the same time. The case it comes with looks silly. The little pencil comes out easily. I put a small tape at the end and that fix it. Overall, it is a decent pocket PC.
- I have had this iPAQ rx 1955 for almost a year. I couldn't be more pleased with it. I have been reading other reviews here on Amazon that say that the iPAQ shuts down and needs to be restarted. Well, that's because the owners do not know how to use it. iPAQs are complex little things and they have to be understood. If properly used, they are sheer delight.
As soon as I got my iPAQ a year ago, I bought "iPAQ for dummies", read it from beginning to end and learnt a lot. I use this iPAQ to send email, write notes, as a calendar, contact list, as a reminder, love it when the iPAQ sounds its cute alarm!)and I even write my store list on it. I saved money on an ipod; my iPAQ is much more than that! I got a 2.0 GB SD card and have stored no less than 200 music files, four gorgeous games and dozens of big photos that I can now always have with me wherever I go. (This iPAQ can also store videos). The iPAQ synchronization feature (with your computer) manages to compress and resize big files automatically. The music sound is amazing, the photos look great, the games are fun and easy to play. This little cute iPAQ does so many things for me and offers me so many more that I am absolutely thrilled with it. A friend who has an ipod is considering giving it away and get an iPAQ instead. When I am not taking my laptop with me, I am OK because I can check and send email via iPAQ.
It is fun to use the handwriting recognition features as well as the voice recognition feature; this, of course, with the added software for voice recognition. I no longer need to use the stylus on my iPAQ to look for an address or a name. I simply talk to it and "she" responds wonderfully well. The iPAQ also had to get used to my awful handwriting, but it certainly did. It was fun at first to see the iPAQ trying to recognize my "r" and my "v". But it was all part of the learning process for both.
I have also stored two e-books that I can read on the iPAQ anywhere I want.
I recenty got a pair of Bose headphones that go great with the iPAQ. Now (with a little add-on) I am going to also turn it into my personal GPS. There is so much this little cute thing can do that I AM AMAZED.
I suggest the book (ipaq for dummies) be bought together with the iPAQ.There is too much this cutie can do and one might be lost without extra help.
- I would be lost without my list of chores...
I do wish the migration from the IPAQ I purchased 4 years ago to the newer model was a little less painful
-
- When I got my Rx1955 I was impressed with the wifi capabilities. Later I was extremely dissapointed that it lacked bluetooth functionality to sync with other devices. I also was dissapointed by the fact that it crashed frequently and had to be reset (windows mobile's fault). My Rx1955 ended up dying, the lcd decided that it would just show bars and not anything else one day. I called hp and they said replacement would cost around 200 bucks with the trade in (I went online and got the next model up with bluetooth instead).
- I bought hp ipaq about 8 months ago, first of all, when i put in the SD card the PC was slow as hell... Secondly, the battery went dead on me just a week ago. I repent buying this product, i should have gone with Axim or clio for that matter. The worst is customer service, they are rude, very rude. I would not recommend this product to anyone. PLEASE DO NOT BUY IT. IT SUCKS....
- The soft ware has problems with memory cards
Programs stall
The screen will not stay aligned
The firmware needed to be updated twice and still does not work
The Main board was replaced and the unit still stalls, does not close applications and the screen losses alignment.
The only GOOD thing I can stay about it is the Technical service provided by HP has been excellant.
Lets see if they will take it back - because I have lost my patience with it.
- At the moment I am in the middle of a 3-day ordeal sorting out Outlook 2002, which comes with the ipaq. Outlook 2002 has many many many known bugs (which only now I find out) and I can't for the life of me figure out why HP would ship it with their hardware. DO NOT INSTALL OUTLOOK 2002 on your machine.
The ipaq itself may be OK, but if this is a foreshadowing of the fun to come...
- Don't Waste Your Time On This Paperweight
- I'll admit, I'm not the techno wizard some on this panel seem to be, but then again, I don't believe you should have to be to operate what should be something simple, like a handheld computer.
In essence, the title of this review says it all. Almost $300 and several months later, I am unable to get this hunk of junk to even turn on. Let alone connect to a server. All of these things were supposed to be fixed by a 'patch' that if someone can download from the HP website, I'd love to see it. All downloads came back with an Error message when I attempted to download.
Long story short, you'd be better off buying a laptop. HP is not known for their handhelds, do not buy this product or anything similar to this from HP. You will be sorry.
- Buggy software dooms this product...
- I'm returning this product after 5 days of struggling to get MS ActiveSync 4.1 to function correctly.
Apparently a number of people are finding that this version of ActiveSync, which is required for new MS Windows Mobile 5 OS devices like the rx1950, can not maintain USB sync connections. Microsoft attributes this to firewall issues, despite conflicting reports from many users posting to PDA user groups [I know firewall was not the problem in my case, as well]. The other 'helpful' solution Microsoft offers for this problem is to use Bluetooth for ActiveSync. But this unit does not feature Bluetooth.
One could potentially use a LAN sync through the WiFi connection this iPAQ features - - - but Microsoft disabled LAN syncronization with ActiveSync 4.1.
I've owned 4 Palm OS devices - this was my first (and last) venture into Pocket PC territory. If a device can't do the basics - maintain a schedule and phone book - then I don't care how pretty it looks.
- HP iPAQ RX1955 Keeps dropping the network! AVOID!
- Bought this HP iPAQ RX1955 Pocket PC for my wife around Thanksgiving 2005 as a replacement for her Handspring Visor Edge which had served her faithfully for around five years.
We set it up to sync up with her desktop using the wireless network throughout the very-large, Midwestern school district she works for. It worked really slick; when she received an e-mail on her desktop in her office in the School District's administrative offices, it would also be replicated on her IPAQ. This lasted for about a day, then "the problem" began. It is forever dropping its connection to the wireless network and she has to call the districts IT guys to fix it every time this happens.
She finally called HP customer support but guess what? They said it was a "software issue" and after 90 days it was out of warranty. They did offer to charge her $49.50 for unlimited telephone support for the next 90 days but no guarantees of fixing it (what a joke).
So I would give this product a "0 Star" rating if it was an option. My advice is avoid this product until they get the bugs worked out of it.
9-10-06 Update:
My wifes IT department convince HP that it was a hardware issue causing the problem and was probably bad from the beginning. HP sent her an RMA mailer and had her send it back to them for repair or replacement OVER TWO MONTHS AGO. Since then it has been lie after lie and broken promise after broken promise. They have told her twice now that it has been shipped back to her but it still hasn't shown up. We are ready to write it of as an expensive lesson about how HP after sale service works and move on to something else. My advice to anyone looking for a PDA is to avoid HP products like they were the plaugue!
- Flimsy hardware, abysmal customer service
- i got one of these pieces of crap for my wife for xmas. She was unplugging the cable when the plug came apart and spat bits and pieces all over the place. HP sent a new cable, telling us that they've had a real problem with the plug coming apart. Well, the damage didn't end there. When the plug came apart, the receptacle on the PDA got damaged. HP is refusing to repair it under warranty, despite the fact that they've acknowledged the cable problem. They want $210 plus shipping to repair it, and are claiming that the damage was our fault. The whole plug/receptacle assembly is one of the cheapest and most fragile designs I've ever seen in consumer electronics. It will be a durability problem for pretty much anybody. HP is being a bunch of (...)about the whole thing, and I'd think twice about getting ANY HP PDA. Maybe try the Del Axim.
- This is a great looking PDA. It just doesn't work. I'm on my second one now, and getting ready to send it back. The first one required daily removal and replacement of the battery to get it to turn on, required 2-3 hard resets per day, and it wouldn't sync with my desktop. The second one requires 1-3 soft resets per day, takes 30 seconds or more just to pull up my task list, keeps forgetting to filter my task list to active items, won't hold as much data from Outlook as my 5 year old 8mb Palm Vx, and won't allow most programs to save to the SD card (and since my calendar alone fills up the base memory, I can't do much at all with the PDA). I'd strongly encourage you to look elsewhere for a PDA.
- Pretty Machine, big disappointment
- I just returned this item after almost 3 weeks of frustration. No problems at all for the first week. Then I put an SD card in it, for 2 days still no problems, then the soft reset problem began. This was not a deal breaker for me so I kept it, because I was really enjoying it and it had a lot of nice features. Then... after at least 3 weeks of use, the power started to be zapped. Somehow it was turning on (and no I did not have any appointment reminders set that would turn it on) or in some other way draining the power even though it was definitely turned off for hours. If it was not going to be available for use when I needed it, it would be no use to me, so it went back.

- I have owned several PDA's ever since the first Palm Pilot hit the market back in the mid 90's (which, btw, still works fine). The OS on the HP locks up too much for me. I am not used to having my PDAs lock up. I can't say my Pilot or my current Palm Treo never lock up... but I can't remember the last time they did. The HP Wi-Fi and bluetooth work well, I give them that. However, the SD card slot broke just after the warrantee expired and now its useless. There are too many other good PDAs on the market to waste your time with this one.
- I'm a full time student and I bought this PDA a year ago. It's been so nice for me to have. The WiFi is perfect. I can almost always get connected. The SD expansion slot is really nice for adding books etc (I have a few different versions of the Bible with commentaries for super fast and easy access). I love the note pad, I can write up things quickly or 'type' them in. Its also SO nice to use the Microsoft Outlook to update my contacts and calendar. It has a nice picture to it and its sweet for picture viewing. Adding tasks is really nice for homework and projects. The battery power is okay... It stays nicely (I do keep the backlight pretty dim... but dim is still a nice reading setting) but the power button gets pressed in my purse sometimes and drains it. I wish there was a lock button. The only negative I've had is that when I got through security at airports it COMPLETELY zaps my charge. Luckily I don't fly THAT often and when I do I can generally find a plug-in to recharge it. I would definately recommend this!
- Use TCPMP to play videos on your IPAQ
- I would not recommend using the Windows Mobile's Media Player on the IPAQ for playing videos. I would recommend downloading a free version of TCPMP DIVX player for the Pocket PC at the following location. TCPMP is a far superior video player than the WM Media Player. You will not have the buffering problems that the WM Media Player has. Your videos will play smoothly without interruptions. It also plays a wider range of video format than the WM Media Player.
http://www.dvdcatalyst.com/support/downloads/
I also recommend DVD Catalyst GT for converting DVD's to playable video files for your IPAQ. It is easy to use and costs less than $20.

I really enjoy my IPAQ. I hope these suggestions help you get more enjoyment out of yours.
- I bought this for my husband on our Anniversary. He loved it has really come in handy from him as he needs a lot of phone numbers to be stored for work and a calendar to keep his ever changing work schedule in. Also, allows him to access wireless internet if he needs to.

- Great Product! Recommend it.
- For years I used an IPAQ 1910. Loved its slim size, gorgeous display and its features. It had one fatal disadvantage! When the removable battery discharged it lost all the data and programs stored in memory and there was no way to put Contacts, Schedules etc on Storage Card. So they were erased each time. At home they could be resynched with the PC and the data restored but on trips - when I needed the data worse - it was not possible. To make it worse the data loss occurred even when the secondary battery showed full charge and the battery discharge happened even if the unit was not turned on. Another disadvantage was that it could not handle a Storage Card larger than 1 GB and its earphone socket used the non-standard 2.5 mm plug (standard is 3.5 mm)
So I bought the IPAQ RX1950. It looks and feels exactly the same as the old 1910 but with added WiFi connectivity, persistent memory (data is not lost even if battery is completely discharged), and ability to handle large capacity SD Cards. Installed a 2 GB SD Card and loaded in several favorite programs like Mobipocket Reader, ProWord Dictionary, XnView image display, Conduit Pocket Player and the games Freecell, SuperSudoku and Scrabble. Also tried, unsuccessfully, to add several free utilities to make navigation and the Today screen more useful.
It was heavy going! I found that I had to Soft Reset so many times during use that I considered returning the unit to Amazon. Got in touch with HP Support Professional via chat. He first advised me to download the latest ROM and Firmware updates. It turns out that my device had all these installed from the factory (as they should have been) - so there was no need for additional update. The technician suspected that the added utilities might the culprit. so I uninstalled them. He also advised me to follow the following procedure:
"Open active sync on the iPaq, then tap on menu -> Add Server Source, then you will see a field called "server address", enter anything into this field. Tap on next on the bottom right of the screen. Fill out the three fields with any information, then select next, then finish. This will bring you back to the active sync menu. Tap on menu -> Schedule, you will see two drop downs, "peak times" and "off-peak times". Change both of these from the default of 10 and 4 mins respectively to "manually". Tap on ok in the upper right hand side. Tap on menu -> Options, tap and hold on where it says "exchange server" and select delete."
Did all of the above and for the past 4 days did not do a single Soft Reset and am a happy user. Incidentally the battery on this unit lasts for a goodly length of time - much more than the 1910 though the battery is just a somewhat higher capacity. I presume it has to do something with data and programs being in ROM & not requiring continuous refresh like the RAM in the 1910.
During a recent trip had occasion to test the Wifi connectivity. Used Gmail to get to Inbox. It was surprising how well the messages could be viewed. Of course sending answers was laborious using the displayed keyboard but it could be done. So now I am looking forward to use it extensively on my forthcoming trip to Europe.
- It's nice, thin and light, but lacks memory and processor power for stronger applications (such as skype). Also lacks bluetooth.
The price and the low weight compensates it's limitations, making this iPAQ a great PDA option.
- Excellent features and a great value for the $$$$
- I came from a Palm environment but I have to say that even before going to a Windows environment I was a tad bit disappointed and frustrated with some of the Palms features, look and convenience. I KNEW there had to be something better. So after some online research, I decide on an IPAQ and off I go to the store for a new a PDA. What I went expressly to look for was one that was:
Windows based
Relatively inexpensive
Had a great display
Was able to handle at least 3 of the basic Microsoft applications that I use (Outlook, Excel and Word)
Wasn't so small that I would lose it or too bulky to carry
Could replace my paper organizer.......
etc...
and I have to say that I think I've found it!
I've been using this for two months and so far these are some of the highlights..........
PROS
Storage case/ cover - Comes with an amazingly sturdy sleeve which allows you to carry it in a pocketbook or a bag without feeling like it's going to get scratched, slide out or that buttons will be pressed.
The battery life is pretty good. Even when I set alerts on my calendar, I can leave this IPAQ on for 2 days without the battery draining.
Existing software and Microsoft Outlook/Word/ Excel compatibility - The calendar alone has 4 views: daily, weekly, monthly and even yearly views. Palm had a view like that but it did it in a way that still can leave a person confused on what day they were entering info on, how many weeks left in the year or what you have scheduled around a certain date. This left me with no questions. Also, I pretty much in love the fact that I can not only read Word and Excel document but I can edit them too. This may be hard to do when it's in portrait view but.....
Choice between landscape and portrait views - ........being able to change the view from portrait to landscape makes it easier for me to edit Word and Excel documents because there's more room on the screen.
Easy software installation/ Syncing - if you have a Word or Excel document that you want to transfer on to this IPAQ it simply a matter of putting it in to a default folder (on your desktop) and it will be added as soon as you "sync" it with your computer. I also added Pocket Quicken to track my finances and it had no problem installing or updating during the syncing process.
Syncing - Another great thing about the sync is that you can easily eliminate the programs that you do and don't want to update. Not that this feature isn't on most PDA's but the fact that I can isolate it so that I only update say - my finances and nothing else or my calendar and nothing else, lends to more flexibility and control.
WiFi - e-mail and navigating the Internet come with ease. I barely miss the fact that it is not bluetooth compatible.
CONS
The stylus doesn't lock in to the PDA very well. Therefore if you turn the unit upside down while the stylus is inside of it, it could slide out.
Freezing - It has frozen at times when I've checked my e-mail and while it's true that you might have to take the battery out and quickly put it back in to reset it, your information does NOT disappear!! Also this has only happened twice in the beginnning and hasn't happened since. Also, I hear that there is a patch on HP's web site to fix this.

- An achiever - but stunted at birth
- I have very mixed feelings about this review. The HP IPAC rx1955 has a lot of potential. After several weeks of owning it, I have come to some conclusions. When working well, it is amazing to have such resources as E-mail and I-messaging, E-banking, map locations, directions, traffic flow, weather radar and news and even streaming video, all in the palm (no pun intended) of your hand. The unit is small, lightweight and stylish. It easily fits into a shirt pocket even with its nylon case. Now, the not so good. HP has designed it with a huge shortcoming of only 25 MB of operating memory. The operating system immediately uses about half of that. Also, the built in storage is only 30 MB, so adding an SD card is mandatory. I make it a habit of going to the "system" tab and shutting down un-needed software to retain a margin of 5 MB of operating memory. This is way too small. I attribute many of the "lock-up" complaints of owners to the background accumulation of running programs. I also go through a shut-down procedure of shutting off all programs and shutting down the WiFi before turning the unit completely off. However, I have still found myself doing just too many soft resets - several a day. I know I have the latest updated software, since I verified it with HP. It's an annoyance, but I'm still somewhat pleased with unit when it operates properly.
Working with the OS is a bit tricky. You need to find software programs and websites that work within the pocket PC framework and unfortunately, within the small operating memory of this unit. Normal websites do not always give satisfying results. Text passages may overlap and become unreadable or link buttons do not show up. I discovered these software to be useful for the HP pocket PC:
Google Maps for Pocket PC - This site is simply amazing. You can search locations and business, see traffic flow patterns, drag the map continously across the screen. You will need to download their software and install it through your desktop while it is synched-up to your pocket pc.
Acrobat Reader for Pocket PC - Many websites offer downloadable .pdf files that need this software to be viewed. Again, you must install it through a synched desktop.
WiFiFoFum - While the HP unit lists available access points (but no bars), this software actually gives a numeric listing of their received power in dbm (better than bars)
Pocket PC friendly websites include:
[...] - This site gives a selection of streaming video from around the US and the world. This is also amazing to see on your pocket PC. I watched a clip of the Beatles performing "Help!"
(...)- This site gives Pocket PC friendly formatted weather reports and maps.
A word about E-banking. Don't give up if you don't find sign-in and sign-out links when the banks website is viewed on the pocket PC. Go to your desktop and find the source URL for these buttons and then type that URL as a "favorite" into your Pocket PC. It will take you directly to a sign-in page.
Update 6-9-07
I have had the HP rx1955 for over 3 months now and I like it so much, I just bought another as a spare from Amazon.com. The model has been discontinued and I don't know if HP is going to continue the rx19XX line. If it does, I would recommend that HP keeps the same form factor and add more user available memory. As I have settled into a routine of closing un-needed programs rather than let them run in the background, there has been less need for doing soft resets. If you adjust to the limits of this model, it will serve you well with its portability. You must also treat it as if it is a small picture frame with a thin pane of glass. I'd say only put it in a shirt pocket and no other pocket where pressure can be applied. I found a small aluminum case that was used to hold a designer wallet and I keep it in that with some packing material when traveling. It for sure beats a clunky laptop when flying. As to WEB surfing, the unit will handle 95% of websites, but there are a few sites that will consider the Windows Mobile 5.0 browser "outdated" and will give you that message. I ran into this when my Credit Union "upgraded" its login procedures and suddenly I could no longer do electronic banking. However, in another case, I was able to monitor the progress of an expected airline flight arrival and even see the local weather radar on the rx1955 as a severe thunderstorm approached the area.
After three months, I would add another star to my review. Also, for all the people that complain about the stylus falling out - make sure the top of the stylus is (gently) screwed on tight. Even a partial loosening of that top can prevent the stylus from engaging a tiny detent inside the unit. Hence the stylus will tend to fall out.
