- Disappointing -- Don't expect a Thinkpad
- Last year I purchased an HP Pavillion laptop which overheated and caused the bezel around the screen to expand and split. When HP refused to honor the warranty (I reported the issue on the last day of the warranty) but graciously offered to replace the screen for 750.00 (the laptop had only cost 1100 the year before) I told them to get lost (I told them a few other things which I can't repeat here).
So I had to replace my laptop and obviously, HP was off the list. I had used a lot of Thinkpads (from the IBM days) and knew those were the best laptops ever made -- built like tanks, great keyboards, gorgeous screens.
Since I was on a budget, I couldn't afford a Thinkpad this time around. So I decided on the 3000 N200. I had never seen one in person so was going based on the Lenovo/IBM name -- I figured the 3000 series would be comparable because heck, even my older IBM Thinkpads were made by Lenovo.
I was wrong. The N3000 is much more like a Dell than the Thinkpad. The N3000 is made out of cheaper plastic. The keyboard has a cheap "clicky" feel and sound. The touchpad is very rough to the touch. The trademark metal hinges of the Thinkpads were copied but instead of using actual metal, they are just painted plastic. The screen is the glossy finish that is more prevalent now. I don't like it because its shiney surface tends to reflect light etc.
Lenovo has changed their standard warranty from 3 years to 1 year which I think is very telling. I fully expect to have to replace this in a year just as I did with the HP.
All of that said, the price of the system given the processor speed makes this system very cost effective. And the system doesn't seem kick off that much heat (so a big improvement over the HP) and it is relatively quiet.
The main reason I went with Lenovo was because I was expecting a solidly built system that would be a pleasure to work on. Instead, this is just mediocre and not as good as Dell (and I don't have a great opinion of Dell). Lenovo has taken what was a superior brand/laptop company and cheapened it beyond recognition. Very disappointing.
