- Have purchased multiple ScanMaker 5950 units to use for work and will do so again as needed. Easy to use, pretty much plug and play and scanning is very fast when you have multiple documents to work with at once.
- We just bought a second one, after the first one died after a household move and some really heavy use. Tried other scanners with document feeders that were more expensive and slower! So went back to the same Microtek model that we knew and loved. Good speed for the money (about 6 ppm, b&w, 200dpi) and the image quality is as good as our other scanners. Sometimes we have to scan a page just to get the light warmed up, but hey, it works great for the money. We need to scan many multipage documents at a time and use Adobe Acrobat with the scanner software, and it's very simple and intuitive to get good scans of even handwritten forms.
- I have had the privilege of owning the Microtek ScanMaker 5950 for just over 2 years. As a Realtor, I find myself daily scanning large numbers of pages. The autofeeder works perfectly for normal-texture paper. I have found that it does not do well with glossy. Also you will not want to put more than about 20 pages in the autofeeder. But within these limits, you can just hit scan, walk away, come back in a minute or two and have all of your documents saved in a pdf document.
The quality of images produced do not seem to be as sharp as my photo-quality Epson scanner, but that is not what this scanner is for. If you want to keep digital records of the paper documents that pass your desk everyday, I cannot recommend any other scanner in this price range. I have used it primarily for archival purposes but also for scanning for faxing from my computer.
For what this scanner is marketed for, scanning documents via the document feeder, I don't think you can find anything better.
- It does everything what they say.
- I like the product, but one thing. It doesn't scan both sides in one shot. Other than that, everything is good. You could trust everything the company says about the product.
- Great; however, watch your paper weight.
- First, it copies both sides without have to do the whole resort thing.
It is sensitive to light weight paper with the autofeeder, but hey, use the flatbed feature!
I have not used nor loaded the scanning software - so I will not comment on that. I have always been an Acrobat Pro type guy and it works without a hitch.
One of the best purchases I have done.
- Works well with XP pro setup was easy and the scanner has met all my expectation
- Great little scanner for the money.
- I ordered this scanner because we had had such good luck with another just like it that we have had for several years. This time, I did have to reinstall the software a second time when there was a problem with the scanner light seeming to stick and a ratcheting kind of sound. I believe that I chose the wrong setup information on the first pass through setup. Once that was changed, it worked like a charm. I think I heard another buyer complain about this but I think it is only an installation error and not a defect in the scanner. Several weeks later I moved the scanner to another computer and it would not power up. I swapped the power adapter with the old scanner and discovered that it the adapter was bad. I called Microtek and they were very helpful and immediately sent out a new one that arrived several days later. Bottom line....I like it a lot and it has a document feeder that beats the socks off any other in the office, especially the HP's
- If you use the paper loader to scan, you have to be quick to load the paper or it will scan the scanner, I'm not that fast.
The loader will not scan multiple images to the same file.
- This is a good little scanner. I used it through grad school to convert research and books to pdf files so I could store them on my tablet PC and annotate them. The tablet weighed less than the several hundred thousand pages I had on it.
It served its purpose well. It created pdfs pretty easily, it did a fair job at OCR (even in French), and generally, I think it was worth every penny.
The down sides I think exist in the software. I bought adobe acrobat because I needed to do some manipulation with the files. The scanner and Acrobat allow me to do everything I want with it. Also, would it kill them to have an ancient Latin OCR dictionary?

- Microtek scanner and software AND Newcorp extended warranty are useless
- Microtek scanner and software AND Newcorp extended warranty are useless
I've deleted my previous 4-star review; that was before the warranty was up and I had my fill of the software the beast uses. It's really just a 1-star machine. Maybe not even that. Some of my complaints below are because other scan software DOES offer these functions.
This will also discuss the extended warranty I got at Newcorp which I would also avoid like grim death as they never could repair it (actually, they never tried).
The software for this unit, ScanWizart Pro is:
1) The ONLY software on my Mac that can't be Force Quit in any way. So, when it decides to give me the spinning beachball of death (again, the only program that does this consistently in Tiger), then I have to shut down the computer manually.
2) I can't easily reset the scan numbers to 0. I MUST scroll through the numbers (from 999 and beyond back down to 0 if necessary).
3) I can't simply hit RETURN or ENTER to start a scan. The arrow must be exactly on the Scan button.
4) No matter how many scans I've done during the day, at some point, I'm asked if I'd like to let the scanner warm up. Was I asked this first thing in the morning? Nope. After letting the scanner sit idle for some time? Nope. I'm asked this immediately after just finishing the umpteenth scan and NOW, for some reason, ScanWizard thinks the scanner needs to warm up. And how long is this warm-up time? I'm not kidding: 538 minutes! I can't find anything about adjusting this or turning it off; there's nothing at all in the help file.
5) When installing or deleting the software, I'm asked if I want to UPGRADE! That's right, in neither case am I upgrading, but that's the button choice. Folks, this is downloadable software and this boo-boo can be corrected at any time (and it only takes a few minutes) by a software engineer, but NO. Microtek can't be bothered with even THIS much quality control.
6) Sometimes the scanner stops the scan midway and says that the user stopped the scan. Nope. Sometimes it stops a scan a few seconds in with no message at all. A ghost in the machine.
7) While it's a tabloid scanner, sometimes there are images that still need to be scanned in parts because they are so large. Unfortunately, the scan color/contrast varies between each scan!
8) ScanWizard still can't address names over a limit of 31 characters (how very 1988!), so, along with the auto-numbering, running out of file characters can happen and you're sometimes not warned about it. That's right, ScanWizard reaches its character limit and just saves each new scan over the old one. You look for all of those scans you thought you did, but only find ONE because all the rest were overwritten.
Speaking of quality control, the unit itself is built to last -- to last until the warranty runs out. I know, this has happened on two units. The warranty dies and so does the scanner. At this point, it puts random lines and bands in the scan. This can't be cleaned or adjusted by the user. Once the lines start, they don't stop.
So, I call up Microtek and am informed:
MICROTEK DOES NOT SERVICE ITS PRODUCTS. THERE ARE NO REPAIRS OFFERED.
But Microtek does offer to sell me a brand new scanner -- for MORE than I can get it on Amazon or anywhere else.
When the scanner is working, it works OK, but do you really want to spend good money on a machine that not only does not last 13 months, can't be repaired when something goes wrong and has software that's like a beta version (it's at 7.6). I don't have another piece of gear like this!
Buying an extended warranty would be a wise idea, but the company that sells it, Newcorp, is a shoe-string operation with no actual ability to repair anything themselves and no customer service (unless you like the "the customer is always wrong" type of customer service).

- I spend $30 returning the scanner. The scanner won't scan image of document only to Word File. Then some of the images does not scan too well. Emailed Customer Service. Took them FIVE days just to ask me what my problem was. Got so FRUSTRATED returned the product. Never have to return an Electronic product , so my husband threw away box. End up having to spend $30 just repacking and reshipping. Save the boxes! Don't think I will buy from unknown maker. Stick to HP's or well known brand!
- * Scanning software crashes out of the box. I had to download an updated version from manufacturer.
* The software does not know how to properly create TIFF files; the ones it creates are corrupt. It also does not know how to create compressed TIFF files. TIFF files are the standard for large-scale professional document storage with packages such as Concordance. On the desktop, other common software packages such as Microsoft Office Document Imaging also use TIFF files. The omission of TIFF support is inexcusable.
* The package does not include any software to edit PDF files, and it installs the notorious C-Dilla license protection/spyware -- for this?!
- Worked well for about the first year, but now it will not communicate with my computer (all checks of hardware and software have failed me, of course).
- I am not pleased with the scanner. The software is very sensitive and I still haven't worked out all the details to function correctly. Do not buy...go spend few more dollars for somethign else.
- Microtek Flatbed Scanners
- Please Note: I purchased a somewhat different model - 6100 Pro - over 1 year ago. I was unhappy with the purchase from the onset and have subsequently purchased a Canon 8400F ... a great scanner.
The Microtek took very good scans from photos and film (35 mm slides). However, it rarely worked. It failed to recognize my computer and when I finally achieved a good scan it just stopped. Eventually, I convinced Microtek to replace the scanner however, the same problem recurred. I tossed the Microtek and bought a Canon.
I could not recommend Microtek for a mid level flatbed scanner. In addition their customer technical service department is courteous, but they are almost impossible to contact.
If you want a flatbed scanner in the $250 to $550 range you should look elsewhere.
- This is my second scanner from Microtek, same model. First one was poorly packed and damaged. So it was replaced. I have used this one for 2 months before it died. Scanning mechanism jams on start-up. Now it is sitting dead. I used to be able to unjam the mechanism by flipping the unit upside down. I can get it replaced under warranty but when I need to scan and finish a pile of paperwork in 2 weeks, waiting for a repair that might cost me more time than a scanner that should have been working for more than 2 months to begin with.
I would not recommend this. Very cheaply made. A heavy book weighs down on the scanning glass and also jams the scanning mechanism.

- Cheap scanner that works OK
- Bottom line, it's a cheap scanner that gets the job done, if you are willing to play with it a little bit. It took me a while to figure out how to get it to do a simple task - scan multiple page documents into a single PDF file. The software makes this a bit difficult (you have to "scan to email" and then choose a medium-high dpi setting). The hardware is acceptable, for the $55.00 I paid for it on eBay. When I'm rich I'll buy a $1,000 document scanner, but until that time, I'm doing OK with scanners like this one.
