- When a Large Bed is Necessary There is No Alternative
- Microtek makes one of the only large format scanners on the market today, which concerned me as I don't like to see a monopoly as then product quality won't be job #1. I was surpised, albit pleasantly when I was received the scanner from CDW and how easy it was to use. It has SCSI, Firewire and USB connections on the back which make it easy to setup and install. Scanner quality is excellent as we scan dental xrays and then send them to insurance companies, who are always complaining about fuzziness of the scans. Needless to say we have had no difficulties with this Microtek and would probably buy another one in the future!

- I have waited four years to buy a large bed scanner. I will never understand why the slight difference in scanner bed size increases the cost so greatly, (an 11 X 14 scanner is as little as $...) but that's the market as it stands. As an artist, I needed a scanner that would capture my work in one scan.
  The Microtek scanner came practially ready to go right out of the box and installed into Windows XP effortlessly. It even came with a firewire card to install into the computer in the event the buyer didn't already have one. Very considerate! All necessary cables, both a Firewire OR a USB will operate it, and all the software was there and ready to go. Plugged in, it woke right up and scanned perfectly on it's first time out, as easy as downloading pics from my digital camera. No problems!
  Amazon.com not only had the best price after a year of looking around, but offered free shipping and still got it to me the next day. If I had to spend this much on the scanner I at least got great service and treated well by the seller, as well as a quality product. OUTSTANDING!

- these are very good scanners the only real competition at this price range is the epson scanners.
  they do have two common failures which we have a repair solutions for. Microtek does not repair

- A nice big flatbed scanner at a great price
- We had been looking for a scanner to scan our kids artwork often on 12x18 paper and my wifes scrapbook pages 12x12. This scanner works perfectlly the detail is great, and I've been happy with the speed.
- Spectacular scanner
- What can I say? This is the best scanner I've ever used. I'm a graphic artist, so I needed a large scanner to do the job, and this baby does just that. Color and black and white turn out equally fantastic.
- It's a very good scanner
- We are a small publisher who scans large print publications for professional use. We ordered the Microtek ScanMaker 9800XL without the optional slide-scanning attachment, since we never scan slides. (The Amazon listings are not very clear on this point, but the more expensive version of this scanner has the slide attachment.) We ordered the scanner on a Saturday and it arrived on Tuesday. It was probably drop shipped from the manufacturer, who is in the same state as us, but that's still pretty efficient. The scanner is faster than our large-format Agfa Duoscan (which we bought for $5,000 six years ago and which is now broken). The Microtek bed is several inches larger than the Agfa's.
  The only think I don't like about the Microtek is, the lid will fold up on a hinge but only at right angles. This bunches up really large publications that need to slop over the edge of the scanner bed at that end. The lid of the old Agfa lifted off completely, and I liked that significantly more.
  But other than that, the Microtek is a great scanner at a reasonable price.
- It's ALIVE!!!
- I recently bought this scanner. As an illustrator, I was tired of chopping up my drawings and scanning them small.
  
  My needs are simple, line art scanned, and this scanner does a BEAUTIFUL job.
  
  Admittedly, I would have purchased the Epson, but I am on a Mac and the Epson in this price range isn't compatible. (Only the $2300 one is. What a scam.) With the guys who say they can fix the issues with it, I went ahead and purchased it.
  
  Like the day I went from my mouse to a WACOM tablet, it's a defining one in my production process.
- Great once up and running...
- A great price for a large format scanner and seems to work well once I finally got it hooked up. There is not a Vista driver for this scanner yet (one is in the works), so I first tried hooking it up to my old XP computer. All software loaded ok, and the computer recognized the scanner, but everytime I tried to use it, the computer froze. So, I carried it down to the old Windows 2000 computer stashed in the basement, loaded the software (note: the Adobe Photoshop Elements version bundled with the scanner only works with XP or later operating systems...not 2000), hooked the scanner up and everything is working smoothly at this time. I sure hope the Vista driver is available soon.
- Good Value But Noisy
- After some comparative shopping, at less than half the price of newer models, the 9800XL seemd to be the best value in tabloid scanners since I was interested in reflective scans and didn't need optical resolutions beyond 1200 dpi (600 dpi 24 bit color 12"x12" TIFF files are over 150 MB! Even if that doesn't exceed your software limit, most PCs will have a hard time handling the files). I'd only recommend higher resolution units if you plan to scan slides or negatives in which case you probably want at least 2800 dpi (I like my Epson V700).
  On the plus side:
  + original setup went smoothly under Windows XP Pro using the FireWire interface
  + calibration is easy and works fine (see below)
  + scan times are acceptable (~3 min for straightforward 600 dpi 24 bit color 12"x17" scan)
  + Digital Ice is useful even if scan times increase by roughly 2-5x
  Neutral:
  o the adjustment options took some getting used to; initially you "reset" them often and start over until you get the hang of it
  o creating and saving custom settings wasn't explained well, but once I figured it out, it worked well and saved time
  Negatives:
  - THE DISPLAYED PREVIEW IMAGE DOESN'T MATCH THE SCANNED IMAGE VIEWED WITH OTHER SOFTWARE ON THE SAME COMPUTER AND MONITOR!!! It tends to be darker making it very difficult to adjust scanner settings to achieve the desired result. You end up doing more test scans than would otherwise seem necessary.
  - scanner is noisy; the combined low-frequency buzzing and high-pitched whirring takes some getting used to
  - the supplied drivers and software worked fine but updating to the "latest drivers" from the MicroTek website caused my system to lock up with "Virtual Memmory" errors that couldn't be resolved until the software was completely removed, the MicroTek folder was manually deleted, and the software was reinstalled (and now some of my startup utilities don't!). I informed Microtek but never heard back.
  - the pop-up "no scanner attached" notice from the MicroTek scanner server is annoying ("Duh, I know that!")
  Other comments:
  > 9800XL with the transparency unit offers some additional attractive software; LizardTech document fractal compression software is tenpting but couldn't find ample background and reviews/recommendations that would help me decide to pony up the extra cash.

- Love this scanner! Great reproduction quality, true colors and fast. Gave it 4 stars only because the software is a bit quirky, but works well. The scanner is a 5!

- Lamps goes out, No Microtek repair service. AVOID!
- The Microtek 9800XL gives OK scans at a large size. However, as many others note, very often the lamp will go out (I understand it's a hardware problem with the lamp driver board).
  Microtek will replace it if you are within the 1 yr. warranty. They will NOT repair it out of warranty. They will helpfully offer you a small discount on a new $1000 scanner.
  
  Let's recap that: I should buy from Microtek because their expensive scanner breaks just out of warranty and they offer no way to fix them. R-i-i-ght.

- I had the exact same problem as many others. Used the thing for 1 year and the bulb died, this was after Very light use. Maybe a dozen or so scans.. very very dissapointing.
  We had to have a working scanner though (I work in a university Music Library and faculty need it) so we actually sent the thing in for repair. It cost $300 + shipping to CA and back, and when it came back, it died again in 6 mos.
  I'm buying an Epson this time. I won't let the lower price lure me..it's simply not worth the headache.

- I cannot tell you how crumby Microtek is. You must avoid Microtek products like the plague.
  
  I bought this scanner 9800XL for about $1000. After one year, I started getting blurry scans. Microtek's solution? Buy another scanner from us, we don't repair anything.
  
  Now I have upgraded to Leopard. New drivers are only available on Microtek's website, which is perpetually down. I called tech support and
  a sleepy girl answered the phone and didn't know anything about computers in general, much less my driver problem. She kept referring to "my website". I said, "What does my website have to do with anything?"
  
  I asked to speak to her supervisor and I got patched into a message that said the supervisor was at home, and to please leave a message.
  
  I wish I could faithfully express how unprofessional this all is.
  
  After my dealings with the Microtek Corporation and manufacturer of mediocre products with zero tech support, I can only conclude and sincerely believe that the Microtek must be run out of a shipping container somewhere in Oakland.
  
  MICROTEK MUST BE GOING OUT OF BUSINESS. Why else would they treat people like this?
  
  Google them if you don't believe me. There are hundreds of threads about how lame Microtek is and how crumby their support is. I have to "rate" this product based on Amazon's review process, so I am giving them one star, but I would give them zero stars if I could...
- "The Beast" - hate this scanner
- We use this scanner in a professional environment and we have dubbed it "the Beast" because we groan whenever a job requires oversize scans and we actually have to use it. It has the most frustrating and nonsensical user interface I've ever seen. (Just one instance of many - the auto numbering feature cannot be reset except by hitting an up or down button - so if is up to 958 and you want to reset it to 0, you have to go down to 957, 956, etc.) It is extremely slow and also has a LOUD annoying whine while previewing and scanning - don't try to talk on the phone while scanning in the vicinity. The Mac driver has never worked properly - and calling Microtek only resulted in their instructing us to re-load the drivers, so we have to do this every time we use the scanner! The auto correction features seem to be weird, but we can't get the driver to calibrate the scanner, so we have to do all corrections in Photoshop after the fact. We have a $150 Canon scanner that is so far superior to the Microtek; I only wish Canon made an oversize scanner.

- This was a fantastic scanner, but after 13 mos - i month out of warranty the lamp went out. Microtek has I understand taken everything off shore - to China no doubt, and they do not repair or have a way to buy parts for this piece. Wish I had waited a while to buy this piece so I would have seen some negative reviews. 1500.00 for a piece of equipment that only lasts 12 months is not - repeat - not a good investment for anyone. Now I am looking for a new scanner.

- I bought this scanner about a year ago and have been happy with it. Unfortunately I bought a new computer running Vista. Microtek didn't release Vista drivers until this month and they don't work! But you won't get any help from Microtek. The only support they seem to offer is by email and so far have been completely worthless. I'm left dedicating an old PC running XP to the scanner. For this kind of money I expect to be able to talk to technical support and get some help. I won't buy another scanner from them, and I wouldn't recommend them to anyone else.

- Our Microtek scanner lasted about 18 months before it had problems with the light and focus. Then the light burned out and started to smell like it there was an electrical fire. We called Microtek and they told us that they do not repair or replace these products. Out of luck - and out of a lot of money for an unsupported inferior product. Do your homework - there are a lot of reviews and "opinions" which describe this very problem. Nevermore - Microtek !
- STILL NO DRIVER FOR VISTA
- We have this scanner at work. Unfortunately, it hasn't been used for the last couple months because there is still no driver for Windows Vista. They have been bumping back the expected release date for a driver for at least three months. If their developers are so slow, or they didn't have access to Vista (which has been available to retail since what January), they should at least put a realistic release date. This scanner is too expensive to have to wait indefinitely for what would seem to be baseline support.

- Scanner laster a little over a year before burning up. Mind you it has a one year warranty. This was with light use. I've had UMAX scanners for years and never had issues with them.
- absolutely no support
- Scanner stopped working one week after warranty expired, which means this scanner only lasted one year. Microtek will not accept the scanner back for repair even at my cost and does not refer you to an authorized dealer for repair. The response is "buy a new one." The time frame for this response is two weeks. Please take the time to consider another brand!
